Delimitation of Boundaries
Delimitation of boundaries is the first step in the conduct of elections.
Article 75 (4) of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, 1977, empowers the Commission to review the constituency boundaries after at least every ten years. Since the constituency boundaries for mainland Tanzania were reviewed in 1995, the Commission saw no need to review them again for the 2000 elections. The total number of constituencies and wards for the year 2000 election were 231 and 2538 respectively.
In 2005 elections, the number of constituencies and wards has been increased to 232 and 2554 respectively, due to establishment and realignment of district and town councils in Tanzania mainland. Realignment was also carried out in Tanzania Zanzibar though the number of constituencies remained 50 as before.
